Krk Island

Krk is known as the "Golden Island", its scenery is a gorgeous combination of rocky and dramatic vistas in the north and lush, green shores in the south and west. There are pebble beaches and sandy coves and lots of interesting villages and in the centre of the island there are ancient villages and a thriving wine making area.

Krk is the largest Adriatic island and is situated in the north of the Adriatic Sea. It's connected to the mainland by a stunning bridge which provides swift and easy access by car. It also has an international airport (Krk-Rijeka), while the marina at Punat is the largest facility of its kind in Croatia. The town of Krk is in the southwest of the island and is the seat of a Roman Catholic diocese. Krk is one of the oldest places in the Adriatic, its Venetian walls, 11th Century Cathedral, newly discovered Roman baths and beautiful harbour make exploring the capital a real treat. Across the water from nearby Punat is the small island of Kosljun, with its 15th Century Franciscan monastery and to the east is the resort of Baska.

There is much to enjoy exploring the island, you could do a small circuit on the “back roads” via Vrbnik, Dobrinj and Kras to explore the interior but other places of interest include Omisalj in the north, a pretty village with mediaeval fortifications and a little fishing harbour; Malinska, a developed resort but surrounded by verdant forest and Jurandvor (near Baska) whose parish church has a copy of the earliest Galgolithic script (which developed into Cyrillic) in Croatia. Along with the great Krk olive oil, Krk cheese and high quality fish and lamb, the island of Krk is proud of its numerous authentic taverns (konoba) and good restaurants.

Krk is one of the destinations with the longest tourist season in Croatia and for those who prefer active holidays we can recommend scuba diving, water skiing, wake boarding, tennis, quad and bicycle touring on 130 km of trails, visits to Biserujka cave, boat charters and much more.
